Your Adventure at a Glance

The Chadar Trek is one of the most unique and extreme winter adventures in India, taking trekkers across the frozen Zanskar River in the remote landscapes of Ladakh. Known as the “Frozen River Trek,” this journey offers a rare opportunity to walk on a sheet of ice surrounded by towering cliffs, snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, and dramatic gorges.

The word “Chadar” translates to “blanket,” referring to the thick layer of ice that forms over the Zanskar River during the harsh winter months. For centuries, this frozen river served as the only winter route connecting the isolated Zanskar Valley with Leh when heavy snowfall blocked all road access.

Unlike traditional Himalayan treks that involve mountain trails and passes, Chadar Trek follows the constantly changing ice formations of the river itself. Trekkers experience a surreal landscape where the frozen river changes color, shape, and texture every day depending on temperature and weather conditions.

The trek is physically and mentally demanding due to extreme cold, sub-zero temperatures, and unpredictable ice conditions. Temperatures often drop below -25°C during winter nights, making it one of the toughest trekking experiences in the Indian Himalayas. However, the reward is an unforgettable journey through one of the most extraordinary winter landscapes on Earth.

About the Trek

Mythology, Best Time & More More

Temparatures

Best Time

The ideal time for the Chadar Trek is during January when temperatures are low enough for the Zanskar River to freeze completely. Ice conditions are generally most stable during this period.

Fitness

Difficulty Level

The trek is considered difficult due to extreme weather conditions rather than altitude. Trekkers must deal with freezing temperatures, icy terrain, long walking hours, and rapidly changing river conditions.

Locality

Culture

Before modern roads connected the region, local residents of Zanskar used the frozen river route to travel to Leh during winter months. The Chadar served as a vital lifeline for trade, supplies, and communication between remote villages and the outside world.

Challenges

Weather

Weather during the trek is extremely cold. Daytime temperatures can range between -10°C and -20°C, while nighttime temperatures may fall below -25°C or even lower. Strong winds and sudden changes in ice conditions are common.

Guidelines

Safety Note

The Chadar Trek is highly dependent on weather and ice conditions. Ice thickness changes regularly due to flowing water beneath the frozen surface. Trekkers must always follow guide instructions and safety protocols throughout the expedition.
