If you look at a map of Uttarakhand along the Indo-China border, you will find a rugged high-altitude desert that was sealed off to outsiders after the 1962 war. For decades, the Nelong Valley and the adjacent Jadung Valley remained ghost settlements hidden deep inside the Gangotri National Park.

Today, travelers are finally allowed back into these restricted frontiers. Often called the “Ladakh of Uttarakhand,” this region offers dramatic canyon walls, glacial rivers, and a raw, silent beauty unlike anywhere else in the Garhwal Himalayas.

If you are planning a trip to cross these restricted borders safely and legally, here is the ultimate guide brought to you by the team at Hike2Heaven.

Why Nelong Valley is Famous

Nelong isn’t your typical green Himalayan hill station. It is a cold desert sitting roughly 11,400 feet above sea level. Here is what draws explorers here:

  • The Ancient Gartang Gali Bridge: A historic wooden stairway built directly into a vertical rock face by Pathan traders centuries ago. Walk across this thrilling cliff-side gorge where ancient caravans once crossed over into Tibet.
  • The Ghost Village of Jadung: Walking through Jadung feels like stepping into a time capsule. You will see old, weather-beaten stone houses left completely untouched when villagers were relocated in 1962.
  • Dramatic Trans-Himalayan Scenery: Stark, wind-carved brown mountains, sweeping canyon gorges, and the roaring Jadh Ganga river create a landscape that feels worlds away from mainland India.

Best Time to Visit Nelong Valley

Because of heavy snowfall and strict administrative windows, the valley is only accessible during specific months:

  • May to June (Summer): Clear weather, pleasant daytime temperatures, and easy road travel.
  • Mid-September to Mid-October (Post-Monsoon): This is widely considered the sweet spot for travel. The monsoon rains have cleared up, the skies are crisp and brilliant blue, and the mountain views are razor-sharp.

How to Get Permits for Nelong Valley

Because these valleys lie right next to the international border, you cannot visit independently without paperwork. Here is how the permit process works

  1. Submit an Application: You need a formal written application addressed to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) / District Magistrate (DM) in Uttarkashi, listing all traveler names, government ID details, vehicle numbers, and travel dates.
  2. Document Verification: Submit physical copies of your valid Government IDs (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) along with vehicle papers (RC, Insurance) at the district collectorate.
  3. Police & LIU Clearance: The application undergoes a quick background clearance via local police authorities (Kotwali / Local Intelligence Unit) in Uttarkashi.
  4. Final Permit Issuance: Once cleared, collect your official day-visit pass.
