The Stok Kangri Trek was once regarded as one of the most iconic high-altitude summit expeditions in Ladakh, attracting trekkers and mountaineers from across the world. Rising to an elevation of approximately 20,180 ft (6,153 m), Stok Kangri stands prominently within the Stok Range of the Himalayas and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Zanskar Range, Karakoram peaks, and the vast Indus Valley.
The expedition begins from Leh, where trekkers spend time acclimatizing to the high altitude before moving towards Stok Village and the remote mountain camps. The trail passes through barren landscapes, glacial valleys, rocky ridges, and high-altitude camps, showcasing the dramatic terrain that makes Ladakh unique. The final summit push is physically demanding and involves traversing snow slopes, glacier sections, steep ascents, and exposed mountain terrain.
Although Stok Kangri was often considered a non-technical trekking peak, the extreme altitude, unpredictable weather, freezing temperatures, and long summit day made it one of the most challenging trekking expeditions in India. Proper acclimatization and excellent physical fitness were always crucial for a successful summit attempt.
At present, Stok Kangri remains closed for climbing due to environmental concerns and ecosystem recovery efforts initiated by local authorities. Despite the closure, it continues to be remembered as one of the most legendary high-altitude trekking peaks in the Indian Himalayas.
